Ocean Acidification and Convention on Biological Convention Policy Brief

As the world comes together for CBD COP16, it’s clear that more attention is needed to tackle ocean acidification—one of the most urgent threats to marine biodiversity. Only 13 government-level ocean acidification action plans are in place, according to the OA Alliance (International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification) and now is the time for stronger global action. The OARS programme connects a global network of ocean acidification experts to support Target 8 implementation through science-based, local and global mitigation and adaptation strategies. Our experts from science, law, and policy have developed key insights and guidance on Targets 7 and 8 with a focus on ocean acidification in a new policy brief for CBD COP16, is available in the link below. WMO Statement on the State of the Global Climate 2023

The annual Statement on the State of the Global Climate from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirms that 2023 was yet another record breaking year, with the highest recorded global temperatures, greenhouse gas levels, sea level rise, ocean temperatures, and ocean acidification. Global observations reported to the SDG 14.3.1 Indicator show that while ocean acidification is observed in all ocean basins, the current coverage is still inadequate, with gaps in observations and data found in all areas. As the rate of change in ocean acidification, and its pattern and scale, show great regional and temporal variability and understanding high-resolution, long-term observation at scales relevant to the affected communities are required. The Report, with input from researchers from national and United Nations Agencies, informs policy makers on the latest climate change science.

OSPAR Assessment on OA Published Online

As part of its 2023 Quality Status Report (QSR), the OSPAR Commission has published an assessment of ocean acidification (OA) in the OSPAR Maritime Area. Several members of the GOA-ON North East Atlantic Hub are members of the OSPAR Intersessional Correspondence Group on OA (ICG-OA) and wrote this publication. Lead author Evin McGovern presented the findings during the OA session at ECCWO5. The assessment states that ocean acidification can be observed in all regions of the OSPAR Maritime Area, which extends from the southern Spanish Atlantic coast to the waters north of Iceland. Trends and variability are discussed as well as future projections of OA and its impacts on ecosystems and ecosystem services. The report highlights the scarcity of high quality ocean acidification time-series data currently available and the great need to increase the frequency and coverage of carbonate chemistry observations being taken in the region. The assessment concludes that ocean acidification needs to be taken into account when considering climate change mitigation and adaptation responses.

2018 Galapagos Ocean Acidification School

The Galapagos Islands are a unique natural laboratory where different currents converge, giving origin to an exceptional marine biodiversity. Roca Redonda is an active submarine volcano where CO2 is released through cold vents, simulating the conditions of ocean acidification. The 2018 Galapagos Ocean Acidification School will be held 19-28 August at the Charles Darwin Research Station, Puerto Ayora, Galápagos. Using natural CO2 seeps as experimental units, participants from Latin-American and Caribbean countries will gain knowledge in aspects of ocean acidification research including in-situ sample collection in a CO2 vent, analytical chemistry techniques for carbon system parameters, and the study of benthic community structure under the influence of high CO2 conditions. Applications are due by 4 June 2018.
